Blood, power... something like that, probably. That sort of attitude was already encouraged at Hyperion, Jack simply took it further than anyone else.

One way of becoming the guy in charge is to just... kill whoever's currently in charge.

It's basically a constant balancing act. Be useful enough so no one decides to terminate you, but don't stand out so much that you become a threat people want to get rid of.
