[the whole thing is honestly so demeaning. Oswald flips through the case file as he waits at the table in the detention center, casually leaned back in his chair, one leg crossed over the other. Fish's words flicker through his mind as he looks through it, her sharp-eyed look trained on him--
"It's your own fault, you know that. You chose to open your big mouth and critique Meroni's prosecuting style as "boorish and akin to a rhinoceros." And correct as you may be...he holds more power over you. So time for you to take your licks to appease his ego."
She'd thrown a file across her desk to him, which he'd taken up, started to protest, and was promptly shut down.
"Yes, it's a public case. Murder. Fairly straightforward." Chin propped on her hand, she had regarded him cooly. "It's boring, dull, and below you. But get it done, act contrite, and you'll be back to handling the bigger cases sooner than you think."
Oswald had stormed out, file clenched in his fist. After a short (ten minute) review of the documents, he was grabbing his coat and heading towards the detention hall. It looked like a very open and shut case, and Oswald was already frustrated and bored with it. He continues to be bored with it as he reviews the case files and what little evidence has already been collected.
Right. Best just to interview this guy, collect his evidence, and get it over with.]
[In a few more moments, though, if Oswald looks up from flipping through the files, he'll realize he's not alone.
The guy he's supposed to be interviewing has, in fact, entered and taken a seat.
...When'd that happen?
He looks... well, he kind of manages to look a little bored with this as well, despite being in big trouble and by all rights should be scared out of his mind. Bored, but... in a very calm manner. Almost a blank expression. The only actual sign of stress are some dark circles under his eyes.]
So. [Oswald tosses the file onto the table, folding his arms across his chest] I'll be asking you a few questions, then I probably won't see you again until we're in court. [if he sounds bored it's because he is.]
Well, I can tell this is going to be an exciting afternoon. [drawled, sarcastic. And Oswald sighs a bit] You don't seem particularly bothered either way.
You're going to ask your questions, the answers to which don't especially matter. Then we'll go to court, at which point you'll easily win, I'm sure. And then I go to jail.

Good afternoon, Mr. Nygma. I'm Oswald Cobblepot, the prosecuting attorney.

[That's the only response Oswald is going to get, as Edward just kind of... keeps looking at him.]

no subject
[Yeah, no, he's with you there, Oswald. Edward is still just sort of staring blankly ahead.
...Not much of a talker, this one.]

[He tilts his head slightly.]
It isn't as if we don't both already know how this is going to go.
no subject
Oh? How's that?
no subject
...I think I have that about right, yes?

no subject
[He's not supposed to lie.]
no subject
And I suppose your lawyer has evidence to prove that you aren't guilty?
[now he's mildly curious. But only mildly.]
no subject
[Appointed by the court. It's not a great defense.]
I am accused of murder. I simply figured I shouldn't add perjury into the mix too.
no subject
...rather suitable name you've got, isn't it?
no subject
[So he's been told, a few times, though generally in far ruder ways.]
no subject
Well. On second thought, I don't think I have much to ask. [he reaches out to take the folder]
But I might back later. Who knows. You're certainly interesting, Mr. Enigma.
no subject
[Dry. Tired.]
...Could I ask you something, maybe? Before you go.
no subject
Certainly.
no subject
no subject
....how do you mean?
no subject
[He tilts his head slightly, curiously.]
I was just wondering if you knew or not.
no subject
....I wasn't aware, no. [he leans in a bit, mildly curious] though I'm curious as to why you think so.
no subject
...Intuition.
no subject
That's an interesting kind of intuition you have, there.
