[Elijah, behind her, just waves a bit, looking concerned but also a bit contrite because, well...once Gertrude starts, there's no stopping her]

"Elijah and I will keep an eye out and make sure no ghosts bother you when you are sleeping. And then we can tell them to come back tomorrow. And that way, you can sleep."

"Nonsense!"[she tsks, folding her arms] "You need your sleep! And we do not need to sleep, so is better that we watch." You're not going to dissuade her, you know~ [from the kitchen l o l he has no idea what his mother is saying but he knows his mother well enough]

It's just... I mean, it happens a lot and that's... a lot of effort to go through... [GUESS WHAT OSWALD HE'S TRYING ANYWAY]

"Is no trouble. We will handle ghosts. You will sleep." [DECISIVE]

"It's alright, Edward. It'll give us something to do." [Elijah's a bit more gentle with his speech, but still fairly straight forward]

[okay well apparently this is just. happening???] ...Um. Okay, I guess...

"Good. You still look exhausted, poor thing. When you finish dinner and go to bed, we'll make sure there's no trouble then."

[oswald returns to the table with his second bowl of soup--which Gertrude eyes critically again]

"....did he add enough garlic?"

[enigmaster]

[Edward has. absolutely no idea how much garlic is "enough", but that's easier to focus on than the first part so okay.] Um... I'm sure he did.

[HE DOESN'T NEED TO HAVE HEARD HIS MOTHER TO KNOW WHAT SHE SAID and Elijah just looks amused]

[Elijah just chuckles at that, as Gertrude starts going into a bit of annoyed grumbling about how he never adds ENOUGH--]

"Yes. Quite. In almost every dish."

Ah... [that's kind of cute] ...It's plenty, I promise.

"Hmph! Well, I'll just have to trust Edward's good taste."

[enigmaster]

[.....sure let's pretend he has that] Mhm. So it's fine. It's... nice.

See? [so there mother. and he's going to eat his soup.

The rest of the meal passes through some gentle bickering back and forth until Oswald has to work a bit on his next case, after cleaning up the leftovers from dinner. So he'll be settled on the couch again with his case files and a small notebook]

[And Edward is just... going to settle next to him on the couch. Not. Too close, obviously, but. Close, still. He's mostly going to pay attention to his phone for now, though.]

[he's....admittedly a little surprised when Edward sits closer. But he's...he won't say anything about it, of course. If Edward feels comfortable sitting closer to him that's...nice. Friendly.

Fairly quickly, though, he gets swept up in his work, muttering to himself a bit and making notes and shuffling papers]

[He'll probably be busy with that for a while when, suddenly... there's a weight against his shoulder. Hey, Oswald, guess what. Someone's leaning against you.]

[.....what. Oswald just....yeah that's a distraction. And he blinks, almost just...he swallows a bit, turning his head slightly. Did he just...fall asleep accidentally? That couldn't have been on purpose.]
