This is... some sort of fruit?

Not quite. A vegetable. They're sweet peppers, stuffed with ricotta--it's the same cheese that was on the sandwich that we had.

You put cheese inside of vegetables? [He still doesn't even know what cheese is.] I thought it was for bread. Shouldn't the sweet pepper be on bread as well, then?

Well, in some dishes, they are roasted over a fire and put on a sandwich. And we put cheese inside of some vegetables. Here--[and he picks one up between his thumb and forefinger]--open~

[oh, he'll... open... his mouth okay this is just how eating works now???]

[it is for now. And he'll pop that sweet pepper right in your mouth sir so enjoy that sweet-bitter-salty-savory-olive-oily taste.]

[that is a lot of flavors Enygma chews, and the longer he does so, the more surprised his face gets, until he swallows] How does it have so many different tastes?

Us mortals have had a lot of time to get creative with our food flavors. [he's going to pop one of those peppers into his own mouth, now, licking the excess olive oil off his fingers]

[There's something about this one he really, really likes. He doesn't know what, precisely, but...] Can I have another one?

[he'll gladly comply, yes, okay that's it's] I... think I like this. [it's good]

Oh? I'm glad to hear that. I'll keep it in mind, then, for next time.

It's... good. You're good at making these. Did you grow these "peppers"?

[agoodname]

Oh, no, I bought them from the market yesterday, along with the ricotta, and stuffed them and marinated them in the olive oil overnight. Someone else grew them and sold them to me.

[enigmaster]

You can just... get these? Whenever you like? [what!!!] That's incredible.

[agoodname]

Well, not whenever I like. But they're in season, now.

[enigmaster]

Oh. Yes, of course. They would have to work around Demeter's whims. [...he's going to try to reach for another pepper on his own]

[agoodname]

[that's fine--he shifts his hold on the peppers so he can reach it more easily] Indeed. But it makes them all the more special when they are available.

[enigmaster]

...Is that how it works? [He takes a bite of the pepper. Very good.] I suppose it's sort of like life, then.

[agoodname]

How's that? [he tilts his head, reaching for another pepper himself]

[enigmaster]

It is more enjoyable because it will be gone later. [He pops another pepper into his mouth and chews.] ...Or so I am told. It's what some people have said, apparently. I wouldn't know.

[he quiets for a moment, then]

That is...one way of looking at it, I suppose.

...It's hard for me to imagine, I suppose, given that I cannot actually die myself. It sounds silly to me, though.

[at that, he chuckles, a little dryly]

How's that?

Well, wouldn't it be better to just have more of it? Otherwise mortals would be voluntarily coming to me in droves. Clearly there's a lot worth staying for.
